課程概述 |
It is noticeable that diverse scholarly fields have recently started to turn/tune their ears to issues of sound, resulting in what some have generically called sound studies. This phenomena, in one way or another, involves these disciplines’ reflexive examination of their own hearing and listening as media of knowledge, and could thus be considered part of their attempts to deal with their perceived predicament as a result of their entanglement with modernity. Taken as such, this interdisciplinary field of study is itself worth a close and critical examination, which forms this seminar’s major purpose. |

課程目標 |
This seminar is organized to serve as an introduction to sound studies. For recent years quite some important publications have appeared with the intention to cover diverse aspects of this interdisciplinary field of study. This seminar will use the following edited readers as main texts (while other supplementary readings will be suggested by the instructor throughout the course):
- Trevor Pinch and Karin Bijsterveld eds. 2012. The Oxford Handbook of Sound Studies. Oxford University Press.
- Jonathan Sterne ed. 2012. The Sound Studies Reader. Routledge.
- Michael Bull and Les Back eds. 2003. The Auditory Culture Reader, Berg.
- Veit Erlmann ed. 2004. Hearing Cultures: Essays on Sound, Listening and Modernity. Bloomsbury Academic. |

課程要求 |
1. Preparatory Notes: Incl. questions, issues and, examples (all students / every week):
Every week all participants must prepare 1-2 page notes for class discussion based on their reading of two required articles. Notes should include questions about the readings, issues for discussion, and, most importantly, examples for sharing with other students. Participants must check out all the musical and other examples described in the readings and, moreover, come up with their own examples to substantiate the readings’ discussions.
2. Class Presentations: Critical summaries, questions, issues and examples regarding assigned readings (two students each week / two, three times a semester):
Every week two students are responsible for presenting summaries of two required readings and leading class discussion. Their presentations should include contextual information of the assigned articles and raise critical comments in their own words. The most important part of their presentations is to sonify/visualize all the examples written in the readings, and besides to demonstrate their own examples. Presentation materials such as a ppt file should be sent to the instructor and the teaching assistant (TA) no later than one day before each class. An effective and creative use of audio-visual materials is highly recommended.
3. Research Proposal – Final Presentation – Term Paper (all students):
- All students submit a research proposal (preferably in English) on any topics relevant to this course agenda due in Week 9 (the instructor will talk with all the students about their research interests and possible proposals around midterms.)
- Give a final oral presentation toward the end of the semester (this can be cancelled due to the special lecture series).
- And write up a 5-10 page term paper (preferably in English) due in the week after Week 18. |
